Slope where retaining wall will be built, shown at start of work

Work on the former Manufactured Gas Plant site at the LIPA substation in Glen Cove commenced on February 28, 2011.  The first work included the mobilization of equipment and other items necessary to execute the scope of work.  Trees and debris were removed along the slope to make room for the construction of the retaining wall to support and safely execute the work. The excavation phase of the project will begin after the wall is installed. It is expected that the wall construction, followed by the remediation activities, will take approximately 120 days to complete.  Work will be conducted Monday-Friday from 7:00 AM until 6:00 PM and Saturdays from 8:00 AM until 6:00 PM.  Saturday work is necessary to complete the project before the substation’s peak demand season.

As a reminder, National Grid has received approval from The City of Glen Cove that authorize a 24 hour parking ban Monday through Saturday for approximately 50 feet on each side of the entry to the site at the corners of Grove and Stanco Streets.  This ban will provide adequate space for trucks entering and leaving the Site. Truck traffic will enter and exit onto Grove Street towards Cedar Swamp Road. No Parking signs have been posted and the ban will be enforced by the Glen Cove police. The ban will be in place Monday – Saturday, 24 hours a day, for the duration of the project. Flyers outlining the parking changes have been distributed in the neighborhood.

A fact sheet summarizing the project and its impacts to the residents has been sent to nearby residents summarizing the work. The Fact Sheet, the finalized Phase I Remedial Action Work Plan and information about the parking ban can also be found in the Key Documents/Major Reports section of this website. A link to the Fact Sheet and Parking information can be found below.

National Grid previously awarded the remediation of the Glen Cove former Manufactured Gas Plant site to Posillico Environmental, Inc. of Farmingdale, New York (Posillico).  Posillico will be completing the excavation portion of the overall site remedy as described in the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation approved Remedial Action Plan.  National Grid has retained AECOM to provide Construction Management services during the remedial action.  GEI will be the Design Engineers of record, act as Environmental Consultants for the remedial execution phase and perform site wide air monitoring.

As work proceeds, the web site will be updated periodically to ensure the community is informed of the project schedule and progress.
