Update, June -July, 2010

National Grid previously awarded the remediation of the Glen Cove former Manufactured Gas Plant site to Posillico Environmental, Inc. of Farmingdale, New York (Posillico).  Posillico will be completing the excavation portion of the overall site remedy as described in the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation approved Remedial Action Plan.  National Grid has retained AECOM to provide Construction Management services during the remedial action.  GEI will be the Design Engineers of record, act as Environmental Consultants for the remedial execution phase and perform site wide air monitoring.

The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) previously installed a temporary utility pole outside of the excavation area.  This pole will temporarily replace the one located within the excavation area.  The completion of the power reroute will be undertaken in the near future once the cables are transferred.

The Phase I Remedial Action Work Plan has been finalized, and will soon be added to the project website where it can be viewed at any time by all interested parties.

Due to logistical constraints associated with the ongoing operations of the substation National Grid will postpone the remedial project work to the coming fall.  National Grid intended to perform the remediation work prior to the peak summer demands on the substation, but the start of the work was delayed by logistical and scheduling issues. In order to ensure that LIPA customers’ power needs are met during the peak months, National Grid has elected to postpone remedial activities until early fall to minimize the possibility of impacts to the community.  The anticipated start date is now September 15, 2010.

The web site will be updated prior to recommencing site activities in the early fall to ensure all pertinent parties are informed of the schedule and progress.
