LIPA commenced its substation expansion project  following the completion of Phase 1 of  National Grid’s environmental remediation work on the former Manufactured Gas Plant site at the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) substation in Glen Cove. The Phase 1 remediation concluded in June 2011. LIPA’s project has progressed in phases from 2012 through 2016.  LIPA completed the final subsurface construction in December 2016.

National Grid completed Phase 2 of the site remediation in 2017.  This included the installation of a groundwater treatment system in the northwest corner of the site.  The system began treatment in September 2017 following installation of a new electrical service.  Following the system start up period, quarterly groundwater monitoring commenced in the first quarter 2018.

The finalized Phase II Remedial Action Work Plan can also be found in the Key Documents/Major Reports section of this website.
